Sound Shaping Language
Poster and Event Design
November 2021
Within linguistics, is comprised of several subfields. I want to focus on phonology by contrasting two language systems; English and Mam. A conference about the relationship between letters and sound and how they can create a structured language. Answering to questions like how letters are connected to certain sounds and how sound of letters is changed based on arrangement. This conference is open to anyone who is interested in the behavior of letters and sound.

Sound Shaping Language presents 20 speakers, from social service interpreters, spiritual elders, to poets, linguistic professors, and composers. The conference is focused on two languages; English and Mam. Mam is one of many dialects spoken in the Mayan community, commonly spoken in Guatemala. Inspired by the theme of the event, the design uses bold type, geometric shapes, lines, bold color, and 3-dimensional letters. The lines, shapes, and gradients are used to depict sound and movement.

Along with the poster, I created a motion graphic that expresses "sound shaping language" through type and shapes. For anyone joining the event, everyone gets a free tote bag to store notes, handouts, and other important items.
